EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

Gallo report on copyright enforcement approved in plenary session

by

The European Parliament yesterday adopted the Gallo report on copyright enforcement by 328 to 245 votes. The text of the report is based on recent anti-piracy policy introduced in France.

This report was submitted by French MEP Marielle Gallo, a representative of France’s centre-right UMP. The text is being called “repressive” by the Left, as well as by consumer rights associations who feel that it represents “one more step in the entertainment industries’ crusade against their own public.” (see Quadrature du Net).

Professional associations have praised the adoption of the text. The SAA (Society of Audiovisual Authors) has called its adoption “very important for the European cultural sector because it represents a good compromise between the different political views and advocated a balanced and fair approach to illegal file sharing”.
