Submarino scoops 2010 Nordic Council Film Prize

Scandinavia’s most prestigious film award, the Nordic Council Film Prize, was presented yesterday to Thomas Vinterberg's Danish title Submarino [+see also:

. The cash prize of DKK 250,000 (approximately €33,500) will be shared by the Vinterberg, his co-scriptwriter Tobias Lindholm and producer Morten Kaufmann of Nimbus Film.

The Prize’s Adjudication Committee comprising senior lecturer Anne Jerslev (Denmark), editor Johanne Grönqvist (Finland) and film critics Sif Gunnarsdottir (Iceland) Le LD Nguyen (Norway) and Eva af Geijerstam (Sweden) issued the following statement: “Submarino is a simple and yet complex work of art, with a strong manuscript and a stylish direction. An elegant, taut and effective dramaturgy, acting presence and an intelligent use of sound and light help to create this insightful picture of human life.”

Submarino had its world premiere in competition at the 2010 Berlinale and has since been a festival hit, winning a Critics Award at this year’s Norwegian Film Festival in Haugesund. The film has also been nominated for the 2010 European Film Awards.

The Nordic Council Film Prize was awarded for the seventh time this year. This is the fourth time that a Danish film receives the award. Last year’s winner was Lars von Trier’s Antichrist [+see also:

The 2010 award will be presented to Submarino’s director, scriptwriter and producer at the Nordic Council's autumn session in Reykjavik on November 3.
