The most important documentary film event in Eastern Europe, the Jihlava International Documentary Festival will have its 14th edition from October 26 to 31.

The backbone of the festival is the four competitions. The Opus Bonum selection focuses on world documentaries and includes Susana de Sousa Dias’ 48 (Portugal), Brigitte Uttar Kornetzky’s God No Say No (Switzerland-Sierra Leone), Christian Von Borries’ The Dubai in Me (Germany), Gianfranco Rosis’ El Sicario – Room 164 [+see also:

film profile] (France-US), Alberto Arce and Mohhamad Rujailah’s To Shoot an Elephant (Spain), Patricio Guzman’s Nostalgia for the Light (France-Austria-Chile-Spain), Stephane Breton’s Ascent to the Sky (France), and Digna Sinke’s Wistful Wilderness (Netherlands).

The Between the Seas competition consists of films from Central and Eastern Europe and boasts 18 films. Romania leads the selection with three films: Andrei Ujica’s The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu, Laurentiu Calciu’s After the Revolution, and Alexandru Solomon’s Kapitalism- Our Secret Recipe. There are also Bad Girls. Cell 77 by Poland’s Janusz Mrozovski, Concrete Pharaos by Bulgaria’s Jordan Todorov, Dialogues by Armenia’s Gagik Ghazerah, Cave by Hungary’s Julia Szederkenyi, K-11 – Confessions of a Sexual Turist by Austria’s Puja Khoschsorur, On Rubik’s Road by Latvia’s Laila Pakalnina, The Seamstresses by Macedonia’s Biljana Garvanlieva, and Germany-Israel-Spain co-production Thieves by Law by Alexander Gentelev.

The Czech Joy competition consists of 15 Czech films, and Fascinations will present 60 experimental documentaries.

The festival also includes East Silver Market, a meeting point for professionals which has its own competition. Winners of best feature, mid-length and short films will receive prize money and distribution support.
