SFI CEO steps down

by

After four years at the head of the Swedish Film Institute (SFI), Cissi Elwin Frenkel announced yesterday her intention to step down from her position as CEO. She will leave the film industry to take on a new job as editor-in-chief of the magazine Chef, as of March 1st 2011.

“I’m very grateful for these four very eventful years in Swedish film, both nationally and internationally,” said Elwin Frenkel. “Sweden has ruled the world with the success of the Millennium trilogy, our talents have been handpicked by Hollywood and our documentaries made inpact on politics on an international level. I feel such great humbleness and love for all filmmakers working in harsh conditions, still realizing all these films.

“Also, I’m very thankful having had the opportunity to work at the Swedish Film Institute. Contrary to what some might think, this ‘concrete bunker’ [the Film House building] is not a nest of bureaucrats but filled with passionate film lovers, working hard to make Swedish film the very best.”

Commenting on her surprise departure, Håkan Tidlund, SFI Chairman said: ”I really regret Cissi’s decision to leave us. She’s been a strong force in modernising the Film Institute, when it comes to both the internal organisation and the shaping of our film support system. Her methodical and engaged commitment in changing the Film Institute has contributed to increasing the standard of Swedish film, which has seen greater recognition both in cinema attendance and at international film festivals.”

Bengt Toll, deputy managing director at the SFI, will act as interim CEO until a new CEO is recruited.
