France and Germany on regional funding

by

The first meeting between the representatives of six French and seven German regions (or Länders) has taken place a few days ago in Paris. The issue on the table is support for film and audiovisual production.
Organised by the CNC, with the collaboration of Unifrance, the aims of this meeting are to share and compare the two countries’ experience of funding, an issue that is currently being developed throughout Germany.
This year investments by the German Länders in film and audiovisual production broke the Euros 100 million-mark, 70 per cent of which went to the country’s two most important film funds: Bavaria and Rheinland. The Länders are the main source of funds for the German industries which find themselves in an enviably protected position. French cinema professionals are eager to emulate the German example. At present France’s two main regional funds, Ile-de-France and Rhône-Alpes, only manage to drum up Euros 10 million and Euros 3.8 million respectively, per annum. This first meeting will also present German and French operators with an opportunity to explore new co-production mechanisms.
