MARKET Italy

MIFED, the French balance sheet

by

Just a few days before the closing of the MIFED, sellers of French films communicated the tendencies noted on the Milanese market.
Their first observation: Russia and Greece buy and pre-order many French feature films. The Moscow firm Central Partnership bought Hélène Angel’s Mercenaires, Tonie Marshall’s France-Boutique, and Catherine Breillat’s Pornocratie, as well as other leading films like Taxi or Asterix, which reached figures as high as 300 thousand dollars. Sellers with more titles to offer, like EuropaCorp, UGC International and Pathé International managed to sell their entire catalogue to Russian buyers.
The eager Greeks caused negotiations to be characterized by an identical rush on sales and top dollar being paid for François Ozon’s Swimming Pool, which Celluloïd Dreams sold at even a better price than the director’s last hit, 8 Women.
In spite of these positive results, the market is still slow for French art films and prices are dropping among regular buyers like Japan and Korea. Furthermore, French sellers, who are represented by the director of Unifrance Véronique Bouffard and by Jacques Le Glou of the Association of French Exporters, have complained about favoritism of the major American products in screenings. These complaints were taken into consideration by MIFED organizers, Rassegne, who also announced their intentions to prolong the next edition of the event by one day.
