Costa-Gavras: return of the prodigal
Costa-Gavras has long been acknowledged as a pioneering filmmaker and a leading exponent of politically-driven cinema. His work has influenced, and continues to inspire entire generations of filmmakers and on the occasion of the Greek premiere of his latest film, Amen, the Thessaloniki has organised a special tribute to the man and his films by screening nine of Costa Gavras’ most significant titles in Athens and Thessaloniki from 29 November to 12 December 2002.
Two of his earlier French productions will also be premiered at this event: A Family Affair and Small Apocalypse and Costa-Gavras will be the guest of honour at the Amen premiere on Friday, 6 December in Thessaloniki. The film is about the Holocaust and the importance of never forgetting that terrible event and when it was first screened in Italy, it shocked the Vatican both with its subject matter and the poster that accompanied the release. Amen is a perfect example of Costa-Gavras’ films always being perfectly in-step current events and social mores.
