Tribute to Theo Angelopoulos in Berlin

by

The Foundation for Hellenic Culture in Berlin, the Greek Film Centre, the Friends of German Film Archive Society and the Guardini Foundation have organised a tribute to Greek film director Theo Angelopoulos.
Scheduled to run from 14 December to 19 January in Berlin, the tribute is just one of a series of events highlighting the Greek semester of EU presidency. It is also part of a wider programme of cultural events organised by the Guardini Foundation and entitled What Man Is. The films being screened include Voyage to Cythera, Landscape in the Mist, The Beekeeper, The Suspended Step of the Stork, Ulysses’ Gaze, Eternity and a Day, the winner of the Palme d’Or in Cannes in 1998.
Angelopoulos drew inspiration from subjects as varied as Greek history, mythology and ancient tragedies, Byzantine iconic art and ceremony, Balkan history, contemporary Greek popular culture and musical tradition, and the originality of his direction has long been widely acknowledged. Angelopoulos gradually developed a singular filmmaking style characterised by his painstaking composition of scenes and the huge number of extended long shots.
The screenings will be preceded by lectures by Greek and German critics and filmmakers on Angelopoulos’ aesthetic perception.
