BAFTA reveals Rising Star nominees

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), has chosen Gemma Arterton, Andrew Garfield, Tom Hardy, Aaron Johnson and Emma Stone as the nominees for the Rising Star award, the only accolade to be voted for by the British public.

Arterton, formerly a Bond girl, could also end up with a BAFTA Best Actress nomination for her turn in Stephen Frears’ Tamara Drewe [+see also:

. She will feature shortly in Michael Winterbottom’s London Fields.

Hardy made a mark in Christopher Nolan’s Inception and is currently shooting Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

Garfield is winning accolades for his roles in David Fincher’s The Social Network and Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go [+see also:

and has bagged the plum title role in Marc Webb’s Spider Man Reboot.

Johnson played John Lennon in Sam Taylor-Wood’s Nowhere Boy [+see also:

and is currently working on Rodrigo Garcia’s Irish film Albert Nobbs.

Stone, the only non-British actor on the list, received attention for Will Gluck’s Easy A and will star alongside Garfield in the Spider Man film.

Finola Dwyer, Rising Star Award jury chair and chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee, said, “It is so important to involve the general public in helping us determine the stars of the future, which is why the Rising Star Award is such a fantastic initiative. Our final five are truly representative of the rising stars who are capturing film fans’ hearts and minds.”

Previous winners include James McAvoy (2006), Eva Green (2007), Shia LaBeouf (2008), Noel Clarke (2009) and Kristen Stewart in 2010.
