BOX OFFICE France

Domestic films claim 44.6% market share in first quarter

by

French features have enjoyed a great start to the year in theatres (see box office news). With a market share of 44.6%, they outstrip US productions (38.4%), while features from other countries clock in at an impressive 17%, according to estimated figures for the first quarter published by the National Film and Moving Image Centre (CNC).

However, audience figures have seen a sharp 9.6% drop compared to the first three months of 2010: in the first quarter of 2011, 52.41m admissions were recorded. After a difficult January (-24.7% due to comparisons with last year’s Avatar phenomenon) and a recovery in February (+5%), the trend was downward again in March (16.74m viewers at -10.6%).

Nevertheless, the overall results are far from disastrous for this is the fourth best first quarter of the past decade.
