Flemish flicks achieve record audience figures in 2010

The Vlaams Audiovisual Fund’s annual report presentation was an opportunity for the Flemish institution to celebrate the excellent results garnered by Flemish films in Belgium during the past year. Indeed, Flemish cinema attracted 2,099,472 viewers, a new record in audience figures.

The last record dates back to 2008, an exceptional year in which the staggering score for Loft [+see also:

greatly fuelled box office figures that stood at almost 1,970,000 admissions. For 2010, Flemish movies reached a 10.25% market share in Belgium as a whole, and a 20% market share in Flanders.

Although 2010 didn’t see any blockbusters reach the record heights of Loft, an accumulation of good results led to this success. Number one at the Flemish box office, Zot van A (photo) by Jan Verheyen drew 420,000 viewers, followed by Ben Stassen’s 3D animated film Sammy’s Adventures: The Secret Passage [+see also:

, Guy Goossens’s Frits & Freddy, Hans Herbots’s Bo and Matthias Timmermans’s Mega Mindy and the Black Crystal [+see also:

, a children’s franchise film by Studio 100.

(which could reach 450,000 admissions), and the forthcoming releases of Kaat Beels’s Swooni, Geoffrey Enthoven’s Hasta la Vista, Didier Volckaert’s Quixote’s Island, Jakob Verbruggen’s Code 37, Frank Van Passel’s Madonna’s Pig, Guy Lee Thys’s Mixed Kebab and Frank Van Mechelen’s Groenten uit Balen.

Set up in 2002, the VAF aims to support the production and promotion of Flemish films in Belgium and abroad. Of its €16.5m annual budget, €13.5m goes to the production of about 12 features per year. The VAF also offers writing, development and promotion funding.
