100 films for Rhône-Alpes Cinéma

by

This week, Rhône-Alpes Cinéma is celebrating its landmark 100 films produced in 12 years. The 100th title is Effroyables jardins by Jean Becker, scheduled to be released onto 350 French screens on 26 March, by courtesy of UFD - UGC Fox Distribution.
Set up in 1990 by film director Roger Planchon at a time when 90 per cent of film production was concentrated in or around Paris, Rhône-Alpes Cinéma embarked upon new projects by automatically reinvesting part of the profits from earlier co-productions. This system allowed them to invest more than Euros 30m over a ten-year period. The money was shared amongst 140 producers and directors and resulted in titles like The Hussar on the Roof and Regarde les hommes tomber and Lucie Aubrac...).
Rhône-Alpes is also where France’s first regional film commission was established. It supplies film and audiovisual productions working in that part of the country with 250 technicians, 1200 actors and 80 different services.
A few months ago the Rhône-Alpes region also opened Studio 24 for interior filming. This studio was the first to be built in a French province for 83 years, and is estimated that it will bring in a revenue of around Euros45million over the coming decade.
