BOX OFFICE Spain

Allen’s Midnight in Paris captivates audiences worldwide

by

Despite his churning out productions at the steady rate of one film per year, audiences seem to be showing no signs of tiring of the unusual world of New York director Woody Allen, even now he has left behind the Big Apple to shoot films around the world. Indeed, his latest movie, Midnight in Paris, is enjoying an excellent run at the international box office and recently became his highest-grossing film in the US in the last 25 years ($23.3m so far).

It has been doing just as well in France, where it has exceeded €9m, and Spain, where, after a very low-key release (on just over 250 prints), it has reached almost €6m. Moreover, its sales agent, Spanish company Imagina International Sales, has confirmed that the film has been sold to almost all territories.

Half of this success is down to a Spanish company, Barcelona-based Mediapro, which co-produced three of Allen’s four latest films – Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger (2010) and Midnight in Paris (2011), in between which he made New York-set Whatever Works (2009) – with US-based Gravier Productions, through the deal signed between the producer Jaume Roures and the director.

Indeed, one of the keys to this renewed success has been taking Woody Allen out of his most recognisable setting – New York, in particular Manhattan – and bringing his stories to different European capitals. First Barcelona, followed by London, Paris and now Rome, where he is preparing Bop Decameron (Italian company Medusa Film is co-producing alongside Mediapro and Gravier), which is sure to hit European screens in spring-summer 2012.
