"I am happy and honoured that The Lady should be chosen to open the Rome Film Festival and that the film’s premiere should take place in a country and a city that are very dear to me”, declared film director Luc Besson. "I was deeply inspired and moved by Aung San Suu Kyi’s story and by her fight for democracy. I hope that her voice may travel across the world and be better known and shared by the general public".

Michelle Yeoh, who was banned from Burma for having played San Suu Kyi, will also be in Rome together with Besson and co-star David Thewlis.
