Blood of My Blood gets off to promising box-office start
by Vitor Pinto
Released on October 5 in 15 Portuguese theatres, João Canijo’s Blood of My Blood [+see also:
film profile] has already been viewed by over 5,000 people, according to a press release from Midas Filmes. The film’s producer and distributor has added the number of people who attended the film’s special national preview screenings to the 3,331 cinemagoers recorded in official figures from Portugal’s National Film Institute, the ICA.
The figure, laughably low compared with box-office figures in other countries, is nonetheless significant if we take into account the box-office results of other domestic films released this year. Manoel Oliveira’s The Strange Case of Angelica [+see also:
film profile], released in April, attracted 2,504 viewers, while Solveig Nordland’s The Death of Carlos Gardel, which opened the Douro Film Festival (see news) and was released in theatres on September 22, sold 2,427 admissions.
The successful release of Blood of My Blood is partly owed to its positive reception from national critics, who were won over by, among other things, the performance by lead actress Rita Blanco.
It should be recalled that Blood of My Blood was presented at last month’s San Sebastian Film Festival (see review), where it received the FIPRESCI Prize and Spanish television’s 'Otra Mirada' Award.
