New federation set up for animation professionals
Last Thursday (October 20), at the 54th DOK Leipzig, German animation professionals decided to unite within a federation, AG Animationsfilm. Its 26 founder members include some of the country’s most important producers and directors of animated films. The nine-strong management committee will soon choose a president.
The creation of a body representing the interests of the sector is partly in response to the fact that, despite the quality of animated content regularly produced in Germany, and the prizes these works pick up at festivals, they have difficulty gaining exposure in cinemas and on television (TV networks have stopped financing them despite their popularity among audiences in order to buy foreign series directly). One of the new federation’s top priorities is thus to boost the status of the animated genre among audiences, TV networks and institutions so that their choices and policies change.
AG Animationsfilm will collaborate closely with the German Producers Alliance, the Federation of Documentary Professionals AG DOK and the Federation of Short Film Professionals, AG Kurzfilm.
