by

From November 29-30, the first German-Brazilian Audiovisual Industry Meeting took place: this series of conferences and presentations of case studies held in Cologne, recently twinned with Rio de Janeiro, served as a meeting place for producers from both countries.

The economic strength of the Latin American giant, which belongs to the BRIC group, is also having an impact on the audiovisual and media sector. Despite modest audience figures in theatres of around 0.6 admissions per inhabitant per year and a market share of almost 15% for domestic productions, Brazil has a powerful television content industry and is, after Mexico, the second biggest film market in Latin America. As if that weren’t enough, a recent law obliges television networks to outsource a percentage of their production, opening up the market to independent producers. Added to all this is the fact that film funds have increased considerably in Brazil in recent years.

The meeting, organised by Medienbüro Knöbelspies and HMR International, brought together representatives of the FFF, the North Rhine-Westphalia Government, and ARTE/ZDF on the German side, and ANCINE, Conspiração Films and Canal Brazil on the Brazilian side.
