Polish films dominate the annual Top 10

Launched theatrically on November 10 by ITI Cinema on a 129-print run, Slovenian director Mitja Okorn’s Polish production Letters to St. Nicholas (Listy do M. - pictured) has just reached number one in the 2011 box-office rankings with 1.83m admissions. The film is showing a very stable performance, attracting another 381,000 viewers from December 5-11 on a print-run increased to 160. This result comes as no surprise for romantic comedies have for some years been the favourite genre by far among Polish audiences.

Letters to St. Nicolas, which was produced by TVN and was pitched as a "very romantic" comedy, centres on five women and five men, who are all lost in life. Okorn said: "We tell stories of human relationships which are obviously not easy. There is always something to lose. The film subtly shows us that happiness is fleeting and we must nurture it."

Polish productions dominate the annual Top 10 for just behind Letters to St. Nicholas is another romantic comedy: Piotr Wereśniak’s Och, Karol 2 (released in January 2011 – 1.7m admissions). And a film of the same genre occupies ninth place: Przemek Angerman’s Wyjazd integracyjny ("Integration Seminar", produced by Kino Świat and Filmcontract, released on November 4 for a total of 907,400 viewers). Excellent scores were also achieved by Jerzy Hoffman’s Battle of Warsaw 1920 (third in the rankings with 1.5m admissions, released in September) and Jan Komasa’s Suicide Room [+see also:
