Writer/Director Jon S. Baird (Cass) has commenced principal photography in Glasgow for Filth, based on the best-selling novel by Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting). The film will also shoot at other Scottish locations as well as in Sweden, Belgium and Hamburg.

The stellar British cast comprises James McAvoy (Arthur Christmas [+see also:

) amongst others. The film follows the scheming Bruce Robertson (McAvoy), a corrupt policeman who sets about ruining the lives of his colleagues in order to secure his own promotion.

Baird commented, “Filth is filled with irreverent comedy and some extremely surreal moments, but ends with a sharp twist of poignancy. The character of Bruce Robertson has to show such a wide range that it could only take an actor as talented as James McAvoy (pictured) to pull it off with the necessary charm and humanity.”

Filth is being produced in partnership by Ken Marshall, Steel Mill Pictures with Jens Meurer and Egoli Tossell Film and Logie Pictures, executive produced by Zygi Kamasa (CEO, Lionsgate UK), Will Clarke (ex-founder and CEO of Optimum Releasing), and executive produced and financed by Maven Pictures’ Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray, Film House Germany, Film i Väst and Creative Scotland.

Marshall said, “Bruce Robertson is not only a guilty pleasure, but a character edgier than all the other characters from Irvine Welsh's works combined. With Filth we have the chance to make a bold and outrageous film that I have no doubt will be unique, darkly funny and ultimately commercial.”

Lionsgate will release in the UK and Sierra Affinity is selling internationally.
