Black Out joins crowded field of local films

2011 was a bumper year in terms of local box-office results for Dutch films (see news) and 2012 looks set to continue the trend for Dutch audiences, with several new local releases performing strongly.

The latest film by Rudolf van den Berg, the WWII drama Süskind [+see also:

, was released last week and entered the box-office top 20 at number two, with a weekend haul of more than €270,000 from 112 screens.

Süskind is based on the amazing true story of Walter Süskind, a Jewish man from Amsterdam who co-operated with the local SS as a cover for the rescue of hundreds of Jewish children. The film stars Jeroen Spitzbergen in the lead and Austrian actor Karl Markovics as his opponent.

Independent Films has released the film, with Fu Works and Cadenza Films bv producing, in co-production with broadcaster Vara.

At number four in the top 20, Dutch epic Nova zembla [+see also:

continues to hold strong in its ninth week, losing only two screens. Its total take now stands a very impressive near €7.9m.

Positions 12 through 14 are taken by the local thriller Doodslag [+see also:

; the children’s film Alfie The Little Werewolf [+see also:

and the sequel New Kids: Nitro! [+see also:
trailer

]
. Their totals stand at, respectively, almost €374,000 after two weeks; nearly €1.9m after eight weeks and almost €4m after seven weeks on release.

Joining them on 57 screens this week is the action comedy Black Out [+see also:

from director Arne Toonen (see news). The Hazazah Pictures and Orange production, co-produced by broadcaster BNN,will be released by Benelux Film Distributors on 57 screens.

As if to confirm the current cinema mania in the Netherlands, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, which began yesterday evening, earlier in the week reported the impressive number of 100,000 presold tickets before the event had even started.
