Morante's first work, Amelio's First Man and tribute to Carmelo Bene at the Bif&st

The third edition of the Bif&st - Bari International Film Festival will take place from March 24-31, 2012. The film gala is organised by the Apulia Film Commission and promoted by the Region of Puglia – Department of the Mediterranean, Culture and Tourism. Among the premieres announced today at the presentation of the event, the world premiere of the first work as a director by the actress Laura Morante, Ciliegine [+see also:

, stands out. It is an Italo-French production starring Morante herself, Pascal Elbé, Ennio Fantastichini and Isabelle Carré. The film is a choral comedy centred on a female neurosis, androphobia, the main character of which is a woman who doesn’t trust men.

(Britain, Austria, US, Brazil), with Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law, Rachel Weisz, Ben Foster and Moritz Bleibtreu, for a round-the-world exploration of sexual morals in various social classes. As well as Contraband by Iceland’s Baltasar Kormákur, an analysis of the ruthless world of smuggling in the US, with Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale, and the premiere, at the same time, of the 3D version of James Cameron’s giant Titanic, with Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet.

In the next few weeks, the titles of two further premieres will be announced, as well as the 12 titles of the competitive section International Panorama. This year the Bif&st is also organising the Carmelo Bene Festival, a wide-ranging retrospective on the great Puglia-born actor and director, ten years since his death. Apart from the screening of 50 hours-worth of documentary material on his activities in theatre, film and television, the tribute will include a series of meetings and events on various aspects of Bene’s art and personality, being as he was one of the greatest exponents of Italian culture.
