Serbian films rule Rotterdam

The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) came to an end this weekend as the country was covered in a layer of snow that caused major problems. The three winners of the Tiger Awards Competition, the festival’s showcase for first and second films, were all films made by female directors.

from Serbian director Maja Milos (pictured). She was joined by Chilean filmmaker Dominga Sotomayor, who directed From Thursday to Sunday, and Huang Ji from China, the director of Egg and Stone.

This year’s jury comprised Eric Khoo, Tine Fisher, Samuel Moaz, Helena Ignez P. de Mello e Silva and Ludmila Cvikova. Each Tiger Award comes with a €15,000 award.

Clip, a sexually explicit drama that looks at Serbian youngsters (see news), also won the KNF Award handed out by the Dutch Critics Association, which includes a grant towards subtitling the film should a local distributor pick up the title for distribution.

Neighbouring Sounds from Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho won the FIPRESCI award, while the Oscar-nominated Monsieur Lazhar by French-Canadian Philippe Falardeau won the Audience Award.

by Andrew Haigh already took the MovieSquad Award, which is decided on by a jury of youngsters aged 15-19.

The awards of the festival’s famous CineMart(IFFR), the development and co-production market, were announced on February 1st. The ARTE France Cinéma award of €10,000 went to Duncharon from Athina Rachel Tsangari, the director of Greek Venice title Attenberg [+see also:
