2011 brings 18% increase on 2010

The total number of admissions to Bulgarian cinemas increased by 18% in 2011 compared with 2010, the National Film Center has told Cineuropa. Last year, some 4.72 million tickets were sold, while in 2010 the number was 3.97 million. New cinemas and the popularity of 3D films contributed to the increase, but Bulgarians also enjoyed domestic releases.

became the most successful domestic release in the past decade, with 376,000 admissions, but the other Bulgarian films fared less well, with Hunting Down Small Predators selling only 16,732 tickets. In 2011, three domestic releases had more than 140,000 admissions, with the lion's share going to Ilian Djevelekov’s Love.net (pictured), with 206,000 admissions. This romantic comedy was followed by Ivan Mitov's Operation Shmenti Capelli, with 168,000 admissions and Viktor Chouchkov's Tilt, with 145,000 admissions. Ivaylo Hristov's Footsteps in the Sand sold 57,000 tickets, while Ivan Vladimirov and Valeri Yordanov's Sneakers was seen by 41,000 Bulgarians.

The most popular five films in 2011 had 617,000 admissions, a dramatic increase over 2010, with 410,000 admissions for the same number of films. Also, 2011 had three domestic releases in the year's general top ten, according to boxofficemojo.com, with Love.net in second place, topped only by Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Operation Shmenti Capelli came in sixth place, after The Smurfs, Puss in Boots and Fast Five, while Tilt was in ninth place, after Transformers 3 and Rio.
