ADMISSIONS UK

Best January since 1971 Best January since 1971

Cinema admissions in the UK reached 16.3million in January 2003, an 8 per cent increase on the same period in 2002. This was also UK exhibitors’ best January in 32 years.
“The last few years have been extremely successful for the cinema industry. It is very encouraging to start the New Year with such a strong performance,” said Debbie Chalet, president of the Cinema Advertising Association (CAA) which collects figures for all UK cinemas accepting advertising.
These excellent results were achieved thanks to a large number of strong titles, namely major US blockbusters like Lord of The Rings: The 2 Towers, 8 Miles, Gangs of New York, Chicago and Star Trek X:Nemesis, the five top films of the month.
With a strong line up scheduled for release later in 2003, including The Hulk, Charlie’s Angels 2 and the remake of The Italian Job, the CAA predicts that cinema admissions in the UK will reach 182 million this year, a 4 per cent increase on 2002.
