24/04/2012 - MEDICI is offering a series of four workshops to boost European film funding through national and regional public funds

Over the last ten years, the clear link between the economic and cultural dimensions of filmmaking has spawned new policies, new mechanisms, and new funding structures. Most recently, the internet, notably with the rise in video-on-demand (VoD) and crowdfunding, has challenged old production and distribution models, but also provided a wide range of new financial possibilities for filmmakers - as long as they can adapt.

For the public funds themselves, the situation is no less complex as, for each, rules and specific conditions have to be adapted to suit filmmaking today. In this creatively exciting context, it has become increasingly difficult to reach a full overview of funding in Europe, as well as to understand the influence of each funding mechanism on a production.

MEDICI is a series of workshops for over 100 national and regional funds investing in audiovisual productions to allow them to improve and make more uniform their practices to better suit current and future productions. The workshops will allow participants to find mutual solutions to their problems, cooperate, and generally improve European film funding.

MEDICI is offering four workshops between 2012 and 2014. The first, Strategies & Initiatives for Film Funders, will be held from April 25 to 27, 2012, in Stockholm. The second, Fund Strategies & Initiatives for Filmmakers, will take place in November 2012. A third workshop, Application, Evaluation, Selection & Decision Processes, is planned for September 2013 in Brussels, while the last, Distribution, Reporting & New Formats, will be held in Switzerland in 2014.

MEDICI is a Foundation for Professional Training in Cinema and Audiovisual Media (FOCAL) initiative in partnership with the Norwegian Film Institute, the Austrian Film Institute, the Centre du Cinéma et de l’Audiovisuel, Fédération Wallonie Bruxelles, and the Swiss Federal Office for Culture, and is funded by the EU’s MEDIA Programme.
