27/04/2012 - No fewer than three Luxembourg-language productions are currently on general release in the Grand Duchy

Though the local annual output in terms of cinema is rather small, there is currently a host of local fare available on Luxembourg screens.

A documentary and a feature film are currently playing, as well as De Ganz Grousse Bier [+see also:

film profile], the Luxembourg-language dub of the2011 Danish animated film directed by Esben Toft Jacobsen that was released internationally as The Great Bear.

The dubbed version, with voices by Dario Cavallaro, Lillie Schmit, Rol Girres and Lex Roth, is distributed by Paul Thiltges Distributions, the only company in Luxembourg to release foreign features aimed at Luxembourg tots in the Luxembourg language.

Currently in its seventh week is the documentary-fiction hybrid D’Belle Epoque, from director Andy Bausch. As its title suggests, the film looks at what was happening in Luxembourg society during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The film stars Vicky Krieps as the onscreen narrator in period garb, who looks at old photos with her servant (Gintaré Parulyté), which sets of documentary inserts.

The film was produced and also distributed by Paul Thiltges.

In cinemas for three weeks is D’Symmetrie von Päiperlek (pictured), a fiction feature from the directorial duo of Paul Scheuer and Maisy Hausemer. Their film, which won the Best Screenplay category at the most recent Lëtzebuerger Filmpräis, is a slightly surreal look at a Luxembourg writer who transforms everyone around him into fictional characters.

The quadrilingual film stars Marie Jung, Frédéric Frenay, Luc Schiltz and Marc Olinger and was produced by Iris Production S.A. in Luxembourg.

Also recently released was the The Notorious Guys (Les Fameux Gars), which like Päiperlek was nominated in the Best Luxembourg Feature Filmpräis (both lost to Beryl Koltz’s Hot Hot Hot [+see also:
trailer
film profile]). The multilingual comedy, directed by the Egyptian-born Luxembourg filmmaker Adolf El-Assal, was produced by Independent Spirit Productions S.A. and is sold by Double Dutch Media.
