After 46 years, world’s strongest bear jumps from cartoon to big screen
- Swedish director Christian Ryltenius will direct the fully animated Bamse and the City of Thieves – Sweden’s most popular comic character – for Tre Vänner
After 46 years, Bamse, the world’s strongest bear and Sweden’s most popular comic character, will have his screen debut. Created by Swedish cartoonist Rune Andréasson, who wrote the series till 1990 – since 1973 in Bamse’s own magazine – he will perform in Swedish director Christian Ryltenius’s fully-animated Bamse and the City of Thieves, which will shoot for Tre Vänner Produktion with support from the Swedish Film Institute.
The institute has chipped in €2.1 million production funding for five new features, including Johan Kindblom and Tomas Tivemark’s adaption of Bamse for Jon Nohrstedt’s production. In his first film the bear, who has his own theme park in Sweden, shows with his friends Little Kip and Shellman that the best weapon against evil is friendship (and a few drops of Superhoney). Release is scheduled for Christmas 2013.

film profile], Swedish director Hannes Holm will film Tosh in Greece, a family comedy from his own, Anders Jacobsson and Sören Olsson’s adaption of the children’s book. Starring William Ringström, Morgan Alling and Anja Lundqvist, it follows Tosh and his family as they set off to Greece, where disasters seem to be all inclusive. Local launch is set for Christmas 2012.
The institute will also back US director Lance Edmands’ Bluebird, an American-Swedish co-production staged by NY-based Vacationland Films and Swedish producer Erika Wassermann for Idyll. Edmands’ original screenplay deals with the disintegration of a poor modern American community in an islolated logging town in Maine.
Swedish director Marianne Lindberg De Geer is preparing Verdict VB 237 District Courth of Piteå – The Murder of a Child, a documentary exploring the murder of a four-year-old boy on the shore of lake Tjeggelva in 1990, produced by DE Geer for her own Firma MLDG Stockholm.
US legendary sexploitation director Joe Sarno - a frequent holiday guest in Sweden, who now wants to produce one last erotic film – is portrayed in Swedish director Wictor Ericsson’s The Sarnos – A Life in Dirty Movies, which Erik Magnusson and Martin Persson will produce for Anagram produktion.
