Andrei Gruzsniczki prepares to make good his Escape

- The director's second feature explores the clash between intellectuals and authorities during the communism

Andrei Gruzsniczki (pictured), whose first feature The Other Irina received the Best First Film award at the Transylvania International Film Festival in 2009, is preparing his second feature, The Escape. The film is from Icon Production and will start shooting in Bucharest on October 15. Production will wrap in the second half of November.

Gruzsniczki also wrote the screenplay and the story centres on events that take place in 1984: a mathematician (Sorin Leoveanu) decides to publish an article in an American magazine without asking for the permission of the communist authorities. His decision will not remain without consequences and those dear to him will be the first to suffer...

Budgeted at €700,000, the film received approximately half of this amount from the Romanian National Film Centre after winning the biggest grant of a project contest organized by the institution in 2010. The Escape has also received support from The Media Partnership.

The cast is rounded out by Ofelia Popii, Florin Piersic Jr., Virgil Ogasanu, Marc Titieni, Dorian Boguta and Alina Berzunteanu. The DoP is Vivi Dragan Vasile.

According to the film's producer Velvet Moraru, the biggest challenge was to recreate the atmosphere of 1980s Romania. The Escape is expected to be domestically released in 2013.
