Greek Literature in UK cinemas

by

The Greek Culture Foundation, the collaboration with the Greek Embassy in London and the Greek Film Center have organised two weekend events dedicated to Greek Literature in Films. Five films based on novels by five pre-eminent contemporary Greek writers will be presented to the British public in London and Cardiff. The screenings are part of the "Greece in Britain" cultural programme for 2003.
The London event was staged during the 7th annual Greek Cinema Weekend (14-16 March) at the Riverside Studios as a sidebar event to this year’s London Book Fair. The event got a good reception and was dedicated to the memory of Ed Lewis (the Cinema Director of the Riverside Studios from 1988 to 2003). Lewis played a pivotal role in promoting contemporary Greek cinema in the UK. After London, the programme will travel to Cardiff from 4-6 April for the first-ever Greek film event to be staged in the Welsh capital.
The programme includes the following films: The Children of Chelidona by Kostas Vrettakos (1987) based on a novel by Dionysis Haritopoulos, The Price of Love by Tonia Marketaki (1984), based on the novel by Constantinos Theotokis, Jaguar by Katerina Evangelakou (1994) based on the book by Alexandros Kotzias, Happy Day by Pantelis Voulgaris, based on the book by Andreas Frangias, The Only Journey of his Life by Lakis Papastathis (2001) based on a short story by Georgios Vizyinos.
