“This prize is an excellent starting-point for the campaign that I am launching for my film in Romania. I think that a festival such as the Berlinale can help a film find its international public, but I also hope it will help it to find its national audience too.”

Bosnian director, Danis Tanović (An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker [+see also:

 - Jury Grand Prix): “This is a very small film and we never hoped to make it to Berlin. I am especially happy for this gypsy family. The aim of the film was to change their situation. I thank the Berlinale for supporting my endeavour, which started from an angry reaction and has now turned into something marvellous with this prize.”

American director David Gordon Green (Prince Avalanche – Silver Bear for Best Director): “I am even happier to receive this prize as it rewards a film in which I pushed everything away that I dislike about directing so as to focus on what I do like about this job and which is often impossible in my Hollywood films which involve more substantial funds.”

Bosnian actor Nazif Mujić (Silver Bear for Best Actor in An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker): “I wasn’t an actor and in the film, I play my own role. I gave it a lot of thought before accepting Danis Tanović’s proposal. The media’s attention has never fed my family. Maybe this film and this prize will be more useful.”

Chilean actress Paulina García (Silver Bear for Best Actress in Gloria [+see also:

): “Catherine Deneuve said so again recently. For an actress, it's difficult to find work if you are old, fat or ugly, but I have no advice to give. The role is an opportunity and a mark of trust on the part of the director who believed in my work. I have never stopped working and I see this prize as recognition of my work.”

Director Denis Côté of Quebec (Alfred Bauer Prize for the work offering new perspectives for Vic+Flo saw a bear): “The film is full of ruptures and elements that are hard to blend together in a single work. I take this as a prize for originality. A way of saying: thanks for daring!”
