by Matteo Vicino will enjoy a large-scale release. The second film by the director behind Young Europe (awarded best director at the Milan International Film Festival) will be distributed in 200 Italian movie theatres starting on Easter weekend (March 28). A large number for small distribution company Al Entertaiment. "We will be facing the biggest films,” Roberto Cipullo of Camaleo affirmed, who co-produced the film with Red Carpet. “But this film is a declaration of love and madness.”

Outing is a politically incorrect comedy starring two friends (Nicolas Vaporidis and Andrea Bosca - photo) who pretend to be gay in order to access financing reserved for gay couples, in order to fulfil their professional dreams. A beautiful set-up. Despite being set in Apulia, and despite the fact that one of the plot’s motors are regional institutions, the film did not receive a euro in public financing. Yet it could not have been filmed any differently.

“It talks of a governor who launches a call for civil union couples,” Cipullo explained. “And Apulia seemed like the right place.” Indeed, regional president, Nichi Vendola, is openly gay. After an initial misunderstanding though, the region seems to now have recognised the film’s worth. Outing will be presented during the Bari Festival on the 27, with Vendola in attendance.

There is a conciliatory tone to the film which leaves little space for polemics. After a set of humorous situations, the protagonists’ ruse fails and meritocracy, love and truth will walk away victors. Does the end justify the means? The spectator does not receive a clear answer to such a simple question. Because in between honest reporters, local mafia, gay people in the closet, people getting ahead for the wrong reasons, tragic incidents, the unscrupulous Milanese fashion world, between farce and social awareness, gags with transsexuals with feathers and references to Ilaria Alpi (the journalist killed in Somalia 19 years ago), the spectator loses sight of the actual spirit of the film. Just a little.
