- First selection in competition for the three filmmakers with Blue Is the Warmest Color , Un château en Italie and Michael Kohlhaas

This year, three French filmmakers will make their first incursion in the race for the Palme d’Or (read the news Selection and the article Les enfants de la Croisette) during the 66th Cannes Film Festival (from May 15th to 26th, 2013).

The first is Abdellatif Kechiche (52 years old) who will unveil his 5th feature film, Blue Is the Warmest Color [+see also:

. Played by Léa SeydouxAdèle Exarchopoulos and Jérémie Laheurte, his new film tells the story of an adolescent’s quest for identity and symbiotic love story with a mesmerizing girl with blue hair. Produced by Quat’sous Films and Wild Bunch (who handles the sales and the French distribution on October 9th) for a budget of 3.99 M€, the feature film was coproduced by France 2 Cinéma, the Belgian company Scope Pictures and the Spanish company Vertigo Films. Pre-purchased by Canal+ and Ciné+, it was also funded amongst others by Eurimages.

The filmmaker is also in the cast besides Louis GarrelXavier Beauvois, Céline Sallette, André Wilms and Italian actors Marisa Borini and Filippo Timi, for the story of a big Italian family of the industrial bourgeoisie, which falls apart, a world that comes to an end and a love story that begins. Produced by SBS Productions for a budget of  5.47 M€, the film benefitted amongst other things from an Arte France Cinéma coproduction, pre-purchases by Canal+ and Ciné+, and an advance on receipts from the CNC. Ad Vitam will distribute the film in France on October 2nd and the international sales will be handled by Films Distribution.

Also played by Swiss actor Bruno Ganz and Spanish actor Sergi LopezMichael Kohlhaas was produced by Les Films d'Ici for a budget of 4.69 M€, including notably coproduction’s by Arte France Cinéma, Hérodiade, Rhône-Alpes Cinéma and the German companies Looks Filmproduktion and ZDF, pre-purchases by Canal+ and Ciné+, as well as an advance on receipts from the CNC. Les Films du Losange will handle the French release on July 3rd and the international sales.
