Lügen: A story about love and lies

- During the shooting of her movie Lügen German filmmaker Vanessa Jopp had her actors develop their characters step by step

After 27 shooting days, German film-maker Vanessa Jopp (photo - Happy as One) wrapped her current movie Lügen that was shot entirely in the Northern German city of Bremen. The story of this ensemble film circles around people who are becoming more or less entangled in a web of lies. Some of them have only little secrets while others deal with self-deceptions or even life-lies.  "Lügen is also about love, trust and the courage to face the reality sometimes," Jopp stressed.

As female lead, the director chose the German actress Meret Becker who was also part of her ensemble film Komm näher on struggling individuals in a big city. In Lügen she is going to marry her boyfriend but certainly she has doubts if she is the one he loves. "During the shooting with Vanessa Jopp, I learned every detail about the habits of my character but I had no idea in which direction this person is heading," said Becker. "I really had to fall into that role." The cast also includes Thomas HeinzeFlorian David FritzJeannette HainAlina Levshin and Elisabeth Trissenaar.

Due to the concept of Lügen, which is based on a treatment but does not have a conventional script, it was difficult to raise financing. The low-budget film was supported with €135,000 by the North German film fund Nordmedia, €100,000 from Radio Bremen and the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF).

Lügen will be distributed by Wild Bunch Germany. "The original approach. the clear vision and the great cast convinced us that Lügen is going to be a very authentic and touching movie," said distributor Amelie von Kienlin, who plans to open the film at the beginning of 2014.
