- Final Cut - Ladies and Gentlemen by Hungarian Gyorgy Palfi to open the mash up and remix film festival, taking place in Rome on May 8-11

“If a film representing the quintessence of mash up cinema was presented in Cannes as an extraordinary event, then it means we are on the right track.”

Mariangela Matarozzo launched the second edition of the MAshRome Film Fest with these words. The event, which is the first Italian festival for mash up and audiovisual remix was Matarozzo’s idea and is being directed by her together with Alessandra Lo Russo (read the interview).

by Hungarian Gyorgy Palfi. The mega mash up, which includes footage from over 450 world classics and created a buzz last year on the Croisette, will be opening MAshRome 2013 (Rome, 8-11 May). The event is dedicated to the contamination of the arts. The genre may not be on everyone’s radar, but it is certainly in synch with our times, with over one thousand submissions received from all over the world.

The final 100 selected have been divided into seven categories. MashPrime, for the most cinema based films, AnimationDocumentaryExperimentalLyricalMusic and Remix. Among the films in the running are musical western Django Superstar by Ivana Radmilovic (Switzerland), Hiob by Marco Gadge (Germany), winner of the latest ECU, the European independent film festival in Paris, and Dans l'ombre by Fabrice Mathieu (France), an experimental black and white film loosely based on The Artist [+see also:

Guest of honour will be Istvan Horkay, the Hungarian artist known for his work with Peter Greenaway on the Tulse Luper Suitcases film series. His latest film Futurismo will be premiering at MAshRome. The film is a new type of concept similar to French Roland Quelven’s work, himself presenting his The Book Of Elements.

Once more, space will be given this year to queer films in the Queer Mash section with films including Dirty Laundry by Arndt Schwering-Sohnrey (Germany), who starred in Inglorious Bastards, and I’ve only just begun by Elias Koskimies (Finland), which received an award at the ECU in the Music category.

The festival will also be giving space to video-installations, panels, live performances and dj/vj sets. For a complete programme, click here.
