Kim Basinger gets help from Petit when Morgenthaler goes live action

US actress Kim Basinger, who won an Oscar, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award and a BAFTA nom for her role in Curtis Hanson’s LA Confidential (1997), plays the lead in Danish director Anders Morgenthaler’s English-language drama Petit, which has started principal photography for Zentropa Entertainments in Hamburg.

Basinger is Maria, who has everything except what her heart desires the most: a child. When told she is infertile, she bribes a troubled dwarf, Petit, to access an infant-prostitution ring, operating on the Czech border; she hopes to save a child, and achieve true happiness, instead she is entangled in a dark world of abuse and brutality.

Most recently starring in Charles-Olivier Michaud’s One Square Mile (2013) and Peter Segal’s Grudge Match (2014), she performs with Canada’s Jordan Prentice, Sweden’s Peter Stormare, Germanys Sebastian Schipper and Sophie Rois in Morgenthaler’s return to live action after The Apple and the Worm (2009).

Already in 2003 his animated short Araki: The Killing of a Japanese Photographer was screened in the Critics’ Week in Cannes, which selected his animated feature debut, Princess [+see also:

(2006) Directors’ Fortnight. Also a cartoonist, Morgenthaler’s direceted his first effort in live action, Echo, in 2007.

Petit, which will be released in 2014, is produced by Marie Gade Denessen and Julie Lind-Holm for Zentropa Entertainments, in collaboration with Maria Köpf for Zentropa Entertainments Berlin, Jamila Wenske and Sol Bondy for One Two Films, TV2, ZDF/ARTE, and executive produced by Peter Aalbæk Jensen for Zentropa Entertainments and Peter Nadermann for Network Movie.
