FUNDING France

Project Development

- CNC earmarks Euros76,000 for producers to risk more in this all-important phase of a film's genesis

Often considered the “poor cousin” of the film development process, film project development in France will benefit from CNC financial support - to the tune of up to Euros76,000 per project. It is hoped that this will go some way to encouraging producers to go the extra mile at this essentially high-risk phase as far as investments are concerned.

That is why CNC managing director, David Kessler, appointed Bertrand Dormoy (currently DG of the Eclair Laboratories) to the Presidency of the Commission that grants funding for project development. The other commission members are screenwriter and director Florence Quentin, producer Yvon Crenn (MK2 Productions), Jérôme Paillard, delegate-general of the Cannes Marché, and producer-and-distributor Michel Saint-Jean (Diaphana).

The commission will meet four times a year to examine requests for grants submitted by feature film producers in order to help every stage of development process: acquisition of rights for film adaptations (or options), original scenarios, authors’ contracts, consultancy fees, the graphic concept of animated films (models, the graphic style, storyboard and pilot...), research, documentation and translation. The only exception being location scouting.
The monies granted must be reimbursed by the producer before the project goes into production.

This support is distinct from that given to screenplays and rewrites. The CNC commission selected the following six projects: Les armes de l’oubliée by Milka Assaf, La fortune by Laurent de Bartillat, Viva Riva by Tunda Wa Munga Djo, La correctionnelle by Mathieu Mercier, La princesse sicilienne by Nora Kaci and Dans la vie by Philippe Faucon.
