With Fear of Falling, Jonathan Demme has given his own contemporary, acute and psychologically complex rendering of Henrik Ibsen’s ‘The Master Builder’. In order to execute his work, Demme worked with two of the most original provocateurs from the American world of cinema and theatre: Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn. The film, which tells the story of a famous architect who increasingly becomes trapped in his own fantasies, is the final step in a long and passionate creative process which absorbed Shawn and Gregory for fourteen years, and which, thanks to Demme’s direction, reveals itself to be both intimate and captivating.
