Five films nominated for the European Discovery Prize

The European Film Academy has just unveiled the five finalist films for the European Discovery Prize. The award is given each year during the European Film Awards to a promising young filmmaker for a first feature film.

The films selected this year come from Sweden, Germany, Italy and Spain. Swedish filmmaker Gabriela Pichler’s first film Eat Sleep Die [+see also:

(photo) - launched in Venice, honoured in the Swedish Guldbagge awards and selected to represent the country in the race for the Oscars - portrays the difficulties of a Balkan immigrant in the Scandinavian country after being fired from her job. The other nominee from Sweden is filmmaker Mikael Marcimain, with his feature film Call Girl [+see also:

– presented in Toronto and also a big winner in the Guldbagge awards -, which follows the dark journey of a girl recruited in a sex business network that reaches government offices.

– presented at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard, and one of the three finalists for the LUX Prize -, that depicts the life of a young lady who helps terminally-ill people to die, is also in the race for the prize. draws the portrait of five people living and working in the rural outskirts of Barcelona.

The European Discovery Prize is awarded by members of the Direction Committee of the EFA, in collaboration with the International Federation of Film Critics FIPRESCI. The winner will be unveiled at the European Film Awards gala, which is being held in Berlin on December 7.
