Bulgaria’s film industry is seeing more and more feature films produced without the help of the Bulgarian National Film Centre, and No One is one of the newest. First-time director Andrey Andonov will produce this independent film through his company, Egregore Films, with NatureMedia and Never Know Production as co-production firms.

No One centres on Vera (Gergana Pletnyova), a young psychologist who visits her estranged father’s cottage in the mountains after he passes away. When her fiancé Tony (Kristian Milatinov) arrives together with her best friend Tanya (Silvya Petkova), Vera expects support and compassion, but over the following days, her seemingly settled life will shatter, with surprising consequences. The cast is completed by Stoyan Radev and Yordanka Angelova, and the DoPs are Antoni Krastev and Hrusto Hristov.

The screenplay, which has as a main theme the exploration of “how freedom feels”, was written by Andonov together with Javor Veselinov. The €100,000 project will be shot over four weeks in August, in the Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria and in Kavala, Greece. A domestic release is expected in 2015.

Andonov told Cineuropa that his main purpose as a director is to “capture the subtle changes in the characters’ transformation, at the right moment and the right pace”.

After studying filmmaking in Dublin, Andonov directed several short films and was an assistant producer for Bulgarian director Kamen Kalev’s new short, included in the omnibus project The Bridges of Sarajevo, a celebration of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It will be screened at the next edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival.
