Sguardi Altrove F.F.: crisis and rebirth of female creativity

Crisis is the recurring theme for this year’s edition of the Sguardi Altrove Film Festival(in Milan on March 13-23) if you are to believe artistic director Patrizia Rappazzo. Sguardi Altroveis among the most important Italian appointments for cinema and female artistic expression, telling the story of creativity when faced with difficult moments. The event will feature a rich calendar of premieres, screenings, meetings and exhibits.

Of the eight selected mostly European (one is Chilean, another is Canadian) titles, seven have never been seen in Italy. Nuovi Sguardi attracts international, female-made feature films. This year, the selection includes one Italian documentary.

by Chilean Marcela Said; and two second films, Second Hand by Portuguese Catarina Ruivo, and Tots volem el millor per a ella by Catalan director Mar Coll.

The other two films in competition include one by Canadian Marie Anne Barbancourt, who with Pur que plus jamais returns to her native Haiti to tell the painful story of violence on women. The other, In viaggio con Cecilia, is a documentary by Cecilia Mangini, who has returned to filmmaking after 40 years together with Angela Barbanente.  Set in Apulia, just like Barbanente’s last film Sole, In Viaggio con Cecilia covers the looming problem of Taranto’s Ilva plant.
