Film London Microwave boosts budget, appoints new team

Microwave, Film London’s microbudget filmmaking scheme in association with the British Film Institute and BBC Films, will invest £2.2 million in London’s emerging filmmaking talent, the film entities announced at Cannes on Monday. Microwave will produce up to six features over three years with production budgets of £150,000, of which up to £100,000 are awarded through the scheme. Under the terms of the newly revamped scheme, the scheme will now offer development funding, up to £10,000 per project and completed films can get additional funding of £25,000 towards prints and advertising.

All these changes will be implemented by a new executive team led by recently appointed Film London Head of Talent Development and Production, Deborah Sathe. BAFTA-nominated Olivier Kaempfer, who produced previous Microwave title Borrowed Time, is the new Senior Microwave Executive, while Tessa Inkelaar is the Development Producer, following her experience working across the previous Microwave slate.

The Microwave development programme, in association with Creative Skillset, has been extended and will train up to 36 filmmaking teams that will be mentored by industry veterans. The scheme is trying to ensure that at least 50% of its long list will consist of Black, Asian and minority ethnic filmmakers.

Deborah Sathe said, “The evolved vision of Microwave will seek to champion dynamic emerging talent, and enable them to make their first features within a fully integrated production environment.”

Applications to Microwave are now open and the deadline is July 30.
