Young talent on the Croisette

The programme of the 42nd Critics’ Week, taking place in Cannes from 15-23 May during the international film festival was revealed yesterday, 24 April.
430 first and second films from all over the world were seen by Claire Clouzot, the director of this event and her team who sifted that down to a final 7 feature films, 3 of which European. The lucky trio consists of Elle est des nôtres by Siegrid Alnoy and Depuis qu'Otar est parti by Julie Bertuccelli, both of whom are French, while the latter film was also co-produced by Belgium. The third film is Reconstruction by Denmark’s Christoffer Boe.

Also competing are an American, Allan Mindel, a Canadian, Bernard Edmond, a Cuban, Enrique Colina and an Iranian, Mamad Haghighat. Six of the seven titles selected will also compete for the prestigious Caméra d’Or which rewards the best first film of any section of the Cannes Film Festival.
Critics’ Week will end on a high note with the special screening of Italy’s B.B. e il cormorano by the youthful Edoardo Gabbriellini.

Five European short film directors from Sweden, Spain, France and Norway will join two non-European colleagues. For the first time in its history, the 42nd edition of the Week will have the support of the EU’s Media Programme and take place under the patronage of Marin Karmitz. The selectors announced that this Critics’ Week will definitely be “off the beaten track” and undoubtedly reveal many of Tomorrow’s talents.
