Acclaimed Irish filmmaker Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father) will commence principal photography on his next film, The Secret Scripture [+see also:

, this autumn. Based on Sebastian Barry’s Booker-nominated bestseller of the same name, and adapted for the screen by Johnny Ferguson (Gangster No. 1), the story follows a 100-year-old woman in a mental hospital and her relationship with her psychiatrist.

The novel won the prestigious UK literary award, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, Book of the Year at the Costa Awards, and Novel of the Year and Choice Award at the Irish Book Awards. The book was abridged and adapted for BBC Radio 4’s popular Book at Bedtime show.

Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo [+see also:

) and Jack Reynor (Glassland [+see also:

) will star, pending contract negotiations, alongside Jeremy Irons (Beautiful Creatures) and Vanessa Redgrave (Foxcatcher). Sheridan’s long-time collaborator Noel Pearson will produce via his company Ferndale Films, with the backing of the Irish Film Board.

Meanwhile, Sheridan’s Oscar-nominated 2002 film In America is all set for an American television adaptation. Negotiations are ongoing with studio majors.

Sheridan’s last film as director was 2011’s Dream House, starring Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz
