31/07/2014 - Documentaries and shorts from Eastern and Western Europe are to screen on a special boat

The Floating Cinema 2014 (15-17 August) will offer Londoners a programme of shorts and documentaries from across Europe on a unique canal boat as it traverses the Grand Union Canal from east to west London, and also at open-air screenings.

Kicking off the event will be a rolling programme of shorts. Director Paul Poet will then introduce and participate in a Q&A at the screening of Empire Me: New Worlds are Happening (Austria/Luxembourg/Germany), an examination of the micronation movement. Svetoslav Stoyanov’s The Last Black Sea Pirates (Bulgaria) follows Captain Jack the Whale and his men as they face imminent change.

Director Peter Kerekes will participate in a Q&A at the screening of Cooking History (Slovak Republic/Czech Republic/Austria/Finland), about military cooks from various European armies. Director Jan Gogola Jr will take part in a workshop at the screening of art documentary Mythmaking (Czech Republic). Martin Mareček’s Solar Eclipse (Czech Republic/Zambia), about a project designed to provide electricity to a remote Zambian school and hospital, will also screen at the festival.

Filmmaker Andrea Slováková will conduct the Floating Film experimental film workshop. The festival will conclude with Across the Border: Five Views from Neighbours (Austria), where directors Biljana Čakić-Veselić, Jan Gogola Jr, Peter Kerekes, Róbert Lakatos and Paweł Łoziński describe a border situation based on the new membership of the European Union and the new relationship to the old member Austria.
