Serial (Bad) Weddings makes a huge splash abroad

The year’s greatest box-office phenomenon in France has just smashed through the 12-million-admission mark (with €72.5 million in takings) at the end of its 20th week in cinemas (via UGC Distribution), thus earning its place in the top 20 best-performing films of all time in the country (and taking seventh place for French-language films). by Philippe de Chauveron has also performed exceedingly well outside the country’s borders, having already attracted audiences of 3.2 million across 17 countries.

Released in Germany on 24 July by Neue Visionen, the film has already enticed over 2 million viewers there (representing almost €14.9 million in takings), and its print run was expanded to 738 cinemas. The trend is exactly the same in Austria, where total takings have amounted to €1.85 million over six weeks (distributed by Filmladen). In these two territories, the feature still finds itself in the upper echelons of the weekly charts.

In Switzerland, where the film was released by Frenetic at the same time as in France (14 April), it has clocked in at €2.46 million in takings, a figure that should be topped up nicely in the wake of its release in German-speaking Switzerland yesterday. And success has also been sweet in Belgium (€2.7 million in takings), Portugal, Canada (thanks to a very positive word of mouth and an exceptional level of stamina in the weekly number of admissions), Greece (where it has stayed at the top of the box office for much of the summer), Turkey, Russia (where it is still hanging on in cinema listings two months after its release), Morocco and Lebanon.

Having already been sold very widely by TF1 International, by the end of the year, Serial (Bad) Weddings is set to be distributed in Scandinavia (Miss Label), the Czech Republic (CinemArt), Argentina and Chile (CDI Films), Korea (Bloomage), Singapore (Cathay), Hong Kong (Orange Sky) and Israel (New Cinema). It will come out in Italy (Italian International Films) and Spain (A Contracorriente) during the winter and will land in China (Orange Sky) in 2015.
