ON RELEASE France

El Bola is out

by

El bola, the award-winning debut film by Spain’s Achero Manas, is out in France today. This film is the perfect example of the distribution problems that some European titles encounter within Europe. Despite winning 4 Goyas (best film, screenplay, male newcomer - Juan José Ballesta, and first film), the OCIC award in San Sebastian 2000 and Revelation of the Year at the 2001 EFAs, and its great performance at the Iberian box office where it was released on 20 October 2000 and is still being programmed, El Bola failed to find a French distributor until now. Produced by Tesela Producciones Cinematograficas, El Bola will be released in France by a newcomer to the distribution sector, Les films du Safran fully two-and-a-half years after it was made. The distributor said that the reason for the delay was the film’s controversial subject matter: child abuse.
