Inspired by Carney’s life and love for music, Sing Street tells the story of a 14-year-old named Cosmo growing up in 1980’s recession-hit Dublin who must break free of a home strained by his parents’ relationship and money troubles, deal with his drop-out older brother’s antics, and survive a new public school where the kids are rough and the brothers are tougher. The film’s soundtrack is by Bono and The Edge.

The film is produced by Carney for Distressed Films (Ireland), Anthony Bregman for Likely Story (US), Kevin Frakes for PalmStar Media Capital (US), Paul Trijbits and Christian Grass for FilmWave (UK) and Raj Brinder Singh for Merced Media Partners (US). FilmNation Entertainment is handling international sales, with WME looking after the US. WME has closed a US distribution deal with The Weinstein Company and FilmNation with Studiocanal for Germany.

Bregman said, “John Carney has carved out a genre of his own - beautiful, soulful movies packed with longing, love, and music. Sing Street is his Cinema Paradiso – the musical film answer to where it all came from.”
