Northern Wave, the festival at the end of the world

The seventh edition of the Icelandic Northern Wave International Film Festival, a remarkable event that combines a passion for local and international cinema with cuisine, has just come to an end. The product of Dogg Mosedottir’s desire to establish a cultural event in his hometown, a fishing village situated a few hours by car from Reykjavik, the festival showcased international short films as well as an Icelandic selection.

The jury always includes a foreign guest, and this year it was my turn to sit on the panel beside my Icelandic colleagues. The Spanish and Scandinavian film industries often participate in the festival, which attracts an ever-growing audience of young people, as well as the occasional family.

However, I believe that what truly makes the festival unique is the country in which it is held: Iceland, a place that in recent years has received growing interest thanks to its distinctive characteristics. For filming, its undeniable uniqueness is rivalled by no other place on Earth, and the Northern Lights make its atmosphere even more magical.

The selection of Icelandic and international short films presented this year was wonderfully rich. As a member of the jury for this edition, I had the honour of working alongside producer Guðrún Edda Þórhannesdóttir and director Kristín Jóhannesdóttir.

We awarded the prizes as follows:

Animation Award: The Wind by Robert Löbel (Germany);

Special Mention: Bahar im Wunderland by Behrooz Karamizade (Germany);

International Award: Albert by Daniel Wawrzyniak (Poland);

Icelandic Award: Megaphone by Elsa María Jakobsdóttir.
