TECHNOLOGY France

Test for digital cinema

by

The first effects of the advent of digital cinema in France and Europe, organised by ADN (the European Agency for the Development of Digital Cinema), will be discussed and analysed at the Digital Cinema European Network (DCEN).
Before 2003 is out, 11 independent European cinemas will be equipped to project films using digital technology, one of which is the Studio des Cinéastes in Paris, managed by ARP (Writers, Directors, Producers). This is also where the system was first tested.
In order to encourage more cinemas to adopt the technology, which costs an average Euros100,000 to install, ADN contributes around Euros30,000. Regional authorities and other investors contribute the rest.
The Europa Cinémas circuit is one of the partners and they are being pro-active in the promotion of digital projection technology within Europe to prevent American companies from dominating this new and potentially lucrative market.
However, the French Federation of Cinemas (FNCF) is extremely hostile to the project since France’s 5000 cinemas have yet to recover the investments they made over the last ten years to modernise their venues.
