Jean-Philippe Martin, the Belgian-based French director who made a splash with his short film Lapin aux cèpes (lit. “Rabbit with Mushrooms”), has just got the shoot under way for his feature debut, De là où tu es, tu peux m’entendre [+see also:

film profile] (lit. “You Can Hear Me from Where You Are”). The movie follows Thomas and his search for meaning and feelings. The rather disenchanted sound engineer shares a studio flat with Wyatt, his alcoholic boss. Immersed in his sounds, he dwells on the painful memory of a love affair and no longer does what he is really passionate about – making soundscapes. Amina, a young, radiant Moroccan woman, forces herself into his life, seemingly in order to flee from her own. Very soon, she proves to be an ideal subject for his soundscape portrait... In order to find out who she truly is, Thomas will have to extend his microphone lead from his own neighbourhood all the way to Morocco, and learn to listen once again. Thomas will be played by Baptiste Sornin, a young Belgian actor who has performed in a great many theatre plays and who could be seen in the films of the Dardenne brothers (Two Days, One Night [+see also:

The movie, which received backing from the Brussels-Wallonia Federation and MEDIA Development, is co-produced by Off-Shore in France and staged by Hélicotronc in Belgium.

This movie therefore marks a fresh collaboration between these two outfits that are stringing together project after project, including such titles as Le Cri du Homard in 2013, which won the César Award for Best Short Film.
